Tie Dye - Hand Dyed Fabrics In Fashion

Posted by: admin  /  Category: Wholesale Tyedye Apparel

Because people have added color to cloth for as long as they have been covering their nakedness, it is inevitable that hand dyed finishes will remain a feature of fashion, which tries to grab the eye with unusual customised effects.

We are all familiar with the heavy decorative bleaching that is so prevalent in denimwear products. These decorative finishes emered from China in the 80’s and 90’s and today no wardrobe is complete without pair of denims that appears to be stressed by age, but that was only purchased the day before. The fabric is stressed using enzymes, bleach and even electric sanding machines to give it that well-worn look.

In 2001 and 2002 Prada took tie dye to the catwalks, and for a couple of seasons the world followed slavishly in his wake. Mostly we saw graded colors, fading smoothly one into another, but we also saw harsh contrasting splits of dark color on light backgrounds. There was delicate dyed striping over fabric that was already printed with a stripe, to create uniquely layered effects.

While the European season for tie dye is usually short-lived and faddish in nature, the African fashion scene is quite different. Tie dye has been practiced throughout the continent for centuries. Northern and central Africa has a rich tradition of hand dyed fabrics. For this reason, you will find tie dye in most Afro-Centric fashion ranges, on a regular basis.

tye dye beddingIn 2005 South African Fashion Week was alive with tie-dyed finishes, represented in the ranges of Stoned Cherrie, Marion & Lindie, Black Coffee, Sun Goddess, JJ Schoeman and Vino Moodley. Gavin Rajah did his bit at Cape Town Fashion Week.

Tie dye has a truly African aspect. It is a craft that one can start with almost nothing, and turn into an income for even the very poor. This is why it will continue to thrive in Africa and India where unemployment is high.

Tie dye will always liven up the local fashion scene due to its versatile nature. Tie dye turns the ordinary into something unique and unusual, a state that many yearn for in this era of mass production and sameness. Tie dye is hand crafted color. It is time for the return of the artisan.

Tips on Learning Tie Dye Techniques For Creating Your Own Shirt

Posted by: admin  /  Category: Wholesale Tyedye Apparel

There is something funny about tie dye shirts in that so few of us own them but when we see someone wearing one at the beach or the park we wish that we had at least one of them to wear when we feel a little bit crazy.

Tie dye shirts aren’t hard to make and in fact its fun to invite some friends over and have a tie dye party. One thing you will want to do is set up a table outside, because messing with dyes inside of your dwelling is just an all around bad idea.

Start out with brand new t-shirts, because they take the dye better then an older one. There are several types of fabric dye that are available from any art supply store and it is best to start out with the "cold water" variety at first.

Also, you will want to pick up a couple of five gallon buckets and a few pairs of thick rubber dish washing gloves while you are at it. When you tie your shirt off you will get different results depending on if you tie the ties tight or loose, so you might consider doing some experimenting at first.

One great way to learn some quick techniques is to use some cloth swatches, so you don’t ruin shirts while you are learning. The trick is to not go crazy with colors at first until you learn how to use them and you will want to start wit the lighter colors first, progressing to the darker colors as you die your shirt or whatever else it is that you are dying. Also don’t worry if your first try doesn’t work out, because through trial and error, in time, you will be a master at the craft.

Tie Dying With The Masses - How To Group Tie Dye In The Classroom

Posted by: admin  /  Category: Wholesale Tyedye Apparel

I’ve loved tie dying ever since I dipped tightly rubber banded t-shirts into tubs of Rit Dye in elementary school. The colors and patterns were magical, but the fun part was wearing my creation!

Several years later and I was in The Brightside Tie Dye Emporium in Brattleboro, VT. Upon checking out with a bag of goodies, I noticed a small sign that announced that the owner was running a class in tie dying. I signed up immediately and soon learned the mysteries of making eye catching, non-fading t-shirts in myriads of colors and patterns. Beyond using the information to create pieces to sell at local farmer’s markets, I also used it in school and summer camp so that kids could make delightful pieces of their own. The pride they showed when wearing shirts they made themselves was justified. They were truly gorgeous.

I’m about to describe the method I used with the groups of kids. I’m sure there are different and better ways, but this worked great for me. The dyes to use are Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes. I always bought mine as a dry powder so that the dye would have a much longer shelf life. If you want to do this on a limited scale, try buying three or so colors. Remember, the colors can be mixed! Dyes, chemicals, and squirt bottles can be bought from the source given at the bottom of the article, though there are several other purveyors, too. Pro just happened to be the company I used. They also sell small booklets detailing how to create certain designs are are well worth the few dollars they cost. Any other materials may be purchased at the local Wal-Mart, K-Mart, or grocery store. The key is that I wanted the shirts to be non-fading and last a long, long, long time. If fading is not an issue, Rit Dyes are far less expensive and much easier to use. If you want to create something that will be regularly worn and still stunning three years from now, here’s the deal…

Here is our method for group tie dying. It’s a lot of work, so roll up those sleeves and enlist the parent volunteers!

tye dye tshirt1)Buy the shirts on sale. We get Large and Xlarge for sixth graders. I do not take pride into account when we do shirts. No one that I’ve met wants a shirt that looks like Spandex! I put several mothers in 4XL, and though they said they would use them for sleep shirts, they sure looked comfortable!

2)You will now need to wash the shirts to remove any grease that was left on the threads from processing. Wash shirts in HOT water with cup of washing soda or Pro-Dye Activator and cup of Synthrapol. Rinse on COLD. Dry shirts

3)Put a different number on the tag of each shirt in permanent marker.

cool tye dye4)Make a solution of 5 gallons of tap water to 3 cups of soda ash or Pro-Dye Activator. You will need four or five batches of this in one tub. I use my large sink for this. Add the shirts; up to 18 at a time, and let sit in the solution for 15 minutes. Wearing rubber gloves, squeeze out and put in washer. Set washer to final spin, and spin with no water coming into tub for rinse. Place shirts in a garbage bag to prevent them from drying.

5)Mix dyes with distilled water up to one week before dying. To one quart of distilled water in an old blender, add the following:

cup of dye

Fuschia

Bright Orange

Golden Yellow

Deep Purple

Raspberry (reddish purple)

cup of dye

Turquoise (FOAMS!)

Kelly Green

Cobalt Blue (FOAMS!)

1 cup of dye

Better Black

6)Store the dyes in squirt bottles and clean milk jugs.

7)Keep folded shirts on a ‘grid table’ when dying.

8)Wrap shirts in seran wrap. Get this from a kitchen / restaurant supply firm.

9)Let shirts sit wrapped for two days.

10)While filling washer (top loading only), take rubber bands off clothes (wear rubber gloves) and toss in washer (12 - 18). Wash and rinse on cold. Then wash on HOT with cup of synthrapol and rinse cold. Dry in drier.

11)Wash with dark clothes the first few times, but shirt will be colorfast.

Dyes and supplies are available from Pro Chemical and Dye Company of Somerset, MA.

Have fun!

Indulge Your Inner Hippie and Learn to Tie Dye

Posted by: admin  /  Category: Tye dye Apparel

Even if you’re not a child of the 60s, you’ve probably had the pleasure of owning and wearing tie dye clothing. If you’ve ever been to an event with a craft fair, chances are that you’ve noticed those eye-catching booths full of colorful tie-dye clothing and home decor. You may even have marveled at how they manage to incorporate those intricate, vibrant designs onto a plain cotton T-shirt. While intricate tie dying is truly an art, you and your family can have loads of fun at home making your own tie dye (or tye dye) creations. Hands down, the best way to learn how to tie-dye is through instructions demonstrated on a video or DVD. Seeing how it’s done, as opposed to reading about it, makes all the difference in the world. Still, tie dye is a process of trial and error, so why not give it a whirl (or a swirl)? It’s All About the Fabric When it comes to tie dye, the right fabric is critical. Natural fibers - like cotton or linen, pick up the dye well. If you stick with 100 percent cotton, you can’t go wrong. To start with, why not pick up some inexpensive T-shirts at your local mass merchandiser? Get one for each family member, and make it a party! Remember, though, that you need to wash and dry the new garments before you start your tie dying party. Unwashed new fabric won’t pick up the dye very well. The Secret of Dyes Actually, the dyes you use to tie-dye aren’t a big secret. For cotton, you need to use a dye that will react well to the fabric, namely Procion MX, dissolved in a urea solution. You can make virtually every color imaginable with just three colors: yellow, turquoise, and fuchsia. But, before you start dying, you need to soak your fabric in soda ash. Tie dye artisans use a few other chemicals as well, which you can learn about on an instructional DVD or video. The Fun Part: Patterns Tie-dye is all about colors and patterns. Learning how to make swirls, crinkles, stripes, tie dye shirtwavy lines, hearts, clovers, and - yes - even peace signs is a great way to engage the creativity of everyone in the family. You can learn to tye knots; twist fabric into pancake shapes secured by rubber bands; roll a shirts to form tubes, which you then tie; and pleat the fabric to make symmetrical patterns. Applying the Dye There are at least six different techniques you can use to apply the dye to your fabric, from dipping and soaking to using squeeze bottles and spray bottles. Again, someone with years of experience can best teach you how to apply dyes to get the results you want. Making it Stick After tie dying your shirts or decor, it’s important to follow the steps necessary to make sure the dye reacts with the fiber. Then you need to repeatedly wash the fabric in a special solution so that the dyes don’t inadvertently mix and so the garments remain colorfast. Ultimately, though, tie dye is all about having fun. It can be a family adventure, a fun way to spend a weekend afternoon with friends, or a way to indulge the creative hippie within you. A great instructional DVD or video will help you learn to tie dye, and send you well on your way to creating gorgeous, vibrant designs.

Kids Just Love Tie Dye

Posted by: admin  /  Category: Wholesale Tyedye Apparel

* They have to dress up to do it…We recommend kids kit up with mask and apron to make tie dye. This will protect their clothes from spills that stain. By far their favourite is the latex gloves they have to put on to keep their hands clean. I am told they make for very good water bombs when you are ten years old.

* It gets messy! Most kids enjoy activities that are messy…of course!?

* They play with color. Most children love to play with bright colors. Color is known to stimulate the brain in a number of ways.

* They work with their hands. Tie dye improves strength and fine motor co-ordination in the hands. Children are forced to work with both hands using string and elastic bands.

* They have to follow a set of instructions from beginning to end, in order to achieve a desired result. This teaches children to read, concentrate, think logically and analyse their results. All skills they can use in later life.

tie dye apparel* It gives them a sense of achievement and self-worth. Having successfully made something on their own fills a child with a great sense of pride which leads to more confidence in their own abilities.

* Tie dye lends itself to self-expression and uniqueness. Children learn about uniqueness and the beauty of a hand-made thing. These are old-fashioned values that have been lost in our mass produced society.

* The Wow Moment! Kids love the moment when the bindings come off and the end result is finally revealed. I call it the Wow Moment. After thirteen years, I still experience it every time I open a new tie dye.

* They get to wear what they have made. Kids get an even bigger boost to their confidence when they are praised for work well done. Every time they wear their tie dye, somebody will tell them how beautiful it is, or ask where they got it.

* Conclusion…tie dye is a kids-confidence-builder…and it is fun!
