There is something funny about tie dye shirts in that so few of us own them but when we see someone wearing one at the beach or the park we wish that we had at least one of them to wear when we feel a little bit crazy.

Tie dye shirts aren’t hard to make and in fact its fun to invite some friends over and have a tie dye party. One thing you will want to do is set up a table outside, because messing with dyes inside of your dwelling is just an all around bad idea.

Start out with brand new t-shirts, because they take the dye better then an older one. There are several types of fabric dye that are available from any art supply store and it is best to start out with the "cold water" variety at first.

Also, you will want to pick up a couple of five gallon buckets and a few pairs of thick rubber dish washing gloves while you are at it. When you tie your shirt off you will get different results depending on if you tie the ties tight or loose, so you might consider doing some experimenting at first.

One great way to learn some quick techniques is to use some cloth swatches, so you don’t ruin shirts while you are learning. The trick is to not go crazy with colors at first until you learn how to use them and you will want to start wit the lighter colors first, progressing to the darker colors as you die your shirt or whatever else it is that you are dying. Also don’t worry if your first try doesn’t work out, because through trial and error, in time, you will be a master at the craft.

T ie-dye clothing today experiences a magical revival. Baby boomers who grew up with tie-dye t-shirts during the flower power and peace movement are now coming into a phase of their lives where they have more time to reflect, remember the values they held dear 40 years ago and have the resources to seek out clothing that will rekindle those valued held before they went into business and were distracted for a few decades.

Dying fabrics has a long history. Men had always the urge to adorn his body to make him stand out. Nature offered many colors and when it was discovered that fibers could be woven into cloth, which then was used to create garments, it was obvious that attempts were made to use the colors nature offered to make those garments more significant.

Initially, dyes, extracted from various plants’ juices, flowers, bark, leaves, etc., were applied to the basic cloth. The problem was that these early dyes did not last through washing or could even be brushed off. This form of coloring has to be considered a form of embellishment and not yet dying.

When it was discovered how a permanent bond of the dye with the fabric could be accomplished dying was born. Different methods were developed how parts of the fabric could be prepared so that they would resist the dye when it was applied to the whole fabric or garment. One way was to apply some wax that would make the fiber un-impregnable to the water based dyes. After the dying process the wax would be removed by heat or some solvent. This method is now known as batik. The other obvious method was to tie the garment into tight knots or fold and tie it tightly so that, when dipped into the dye, some areas could not be reached by the dye. We call this tie-dying.

During a period at the end of the 16th century Japan was divided into kingdoms which were often at war with each other. In recognition of special bravery in battles warlords often awarded officers most prized tie-dyed kimono or kosode. A special variety of tie-dye is used in these kimonos. Larger areas of the fabric are tied off to create white areas which are then filled with ink-drawings of intricate flowers, landscapes and sceneries.

Those gifts have been passed down from generation to generation and some can now be found in museums. Even though the natural dyes have faded, the designs of flowers and detailed scenes and landscapes are still magnificent.

The Nike Dunk Pro SB Mid - Tie Dye is one of the most notable members of the rather extensive Nike ‘Mid’ dunks family. This is a family it shares alongside the likes of Nike Dunk SB Mid Premium Navy White, the Nike SB Mid Premium Television, the Nike Dunk Mid Pro SB Griptape and the Nike SB Dunk Mid Pro Sea Crystal. Of all the items on the ‘mid-size’ Nike dunks I have gotten to use over the years - and these are quite a number - I have to confess that it is the Nike Pro SB Mid - Tie Dye (which I only got to use recently), that I have gotten most enchanted with.

As its name suggests, Nike SB Mid - Tie Dye is one unapologetically colorful shoe, one on which almost all colors of the rainbow make an appearance. Looking at my particular pair, I can identify more than 7 different colors. On the bottom part of the sole, the part that is in contact with the ground for instance, there is yellow - a light hue of it. On the upper part of the sole, where the sole gets connected to the rest of the shoe, there is white - which later makes an appearance on the front region of the shoe adjacent to its tongue, and on its (original) shoelaces. Then there is black, on the front part of the shoe, especially on the patch that connects the different parts that make up the shoe’s upper body. Yellow, this time a darker hue, shows up on the flap that is provided to supplement the shoe-lace as a mechanism for securing the shoe on the foot. Red is the color Nike uses for its trademark ‘tick’ on the Nike Dunk Pro SB Mid - Tie Dye, with green making a showing at the very back of the shoe; where the tie and dye affair is most clearly manifest.

In terms of height, Nike Dunk Pro SB Mid - Tie Dye is quite a short shoe, one which more strictly speaking, would be classified as belonging to the Nike ‘Low’ dunks family. The rise in its gradient is gradual (and modest), starting from the front section of the shoe where the toes go in, and peaking towards the middle section of the shoe, so that (like all Dunks), it gets to its highest at the ‘tip of the tongue’ where the shoe’s upper body meets its wearer’s foot-trunk.

As alluded to earlier, for a tying mechanism, Nike use a combination of the traditional shoelace and a flap mechanism; which seems to be its preferred combination of securing mechanisms in all its modern dunks. The securing flap, of course, in addition to its primary role of keeping the shoe in place also serves the role of adding to colorfulness in this particular pair.

All said and done, Nike Pro SB Mid - Tie Dye comes across as a particularly ideal shoe; especially for casual use.

Tie-dyed blouses or shirts could be associated with the "hippie" style of the early 70s as popularized by some music icons of that time. It was made popular in several countries all over the world. The popularity was easily gained as it was trendy and the looks can be achieved easily from simple to more complex processes.

Tie-dyeing uses bright colors and different dyeing methods in order to achieve the patterned designs in clothing. The basic tie-dye process can be done at home by applying different colors of dye on folded or knotted cloth. When the cloth absorbed the dye already, it is then set off to dry. Patterned lines and designs can be accomplished upon removing the knots after drying. The patterns made by the tie-dyeing process can be seen as a very appealing work of art. Changing the direction of the knots or twisting the material towards one direction could easily tweak the resulting pattern.

There are also other complex methods used by professionals in combining colors, applying dye and making more unique patterns. Different shapes and color combinations are achieved by using non-typical folds and patterns. The designs could also be further accented by rich embroideries or accessories.

As it is associated with bright colors and asymmetric designs, clothes that are tie-dyed are usually worn during the summer season. It is also for this reason that it is more widely used in tropical countries. Shirts and accessories made up from this process can be seen more often in beaches or summer picnics. Aside from colors, the materials that are usually tie-dyed are cotton. Clothes made up of cotton are worn during warm weather. And tie-dyed clothes commonly comes as a day-time shirt or shawl.

But in the middle of other high fashion styles, of flair and glamour, would there still be a place for tie-dyed materials?

As with other fashion styles, tie-dyeing can die slowly as time goes by. Other modern methods in accenting clothes are now being introduced. Too much colors on one attire is no longer eye-pleasing for the present day fashion. In contrast to the numerous bright colors and busy patterns of tie-dyed clothes, what is more popular now are plain black or white. Women would then just accessorized with gold or silver jewelries, belts, shoes and bags. While men’s common dark suit could easily be concluded with a bow or tie and often cufflinks for added elegance.

Even casual wears have changed in trends and slowly adopted the monotonous white and black combination. Though some bright colors are still considered stylish like green, yellow, purple are red, they usually come in one-color dresses and no too-busy designs. Simplicity, clarity and cleanliness direct the current theme of fashion.

But even if modern fashion style would be bidding goodbye to tie-dyed clothes, surely this would be only for a short time. Because fashion has never said goodbye to any style permanently. The designs come and go and after several decades, they will come again with different packaging. So if you have tie-dyed clothes that you have not been able to wear for quite some time, just keep it on your closet. You will never know when you are going to use it just yet.

Tie-dye is a method of coloring fabric in a variety of colors where the fabric is first tied up at interval with the help of rubber bands or threads and then dyed to give a distinctive pattern. The technique has been in use since ancient times to create banding and streaking patterns on fabric.

Since tie dying is a convenient way to color cloth of virtually any size, it is a popular method to personalize boring white underwear. Tie-dying underwear is easy enough to do at home and requires only a few basic supplies. First of all, it needs to be ascertained that the underwear fabric is at least 50% cotton, because otherwise the dye does not catch. Then, a few things have to be brought together before the process can begin. These include squirt bottles or spraying cans for applying the dye, a container to hold the underwear while dying, and of course the dye. In addition, a few extras such as gloves, aprons, newspapers, polythene bags, and rags to help keep the body and the house clean are also advisable.

The first step to tie-dying underwear is its pre-treatment. This involves washing the underwear to remove anything that might hinder the coloring. At times, certain dyes require the fabric to be chemically treated before it can be dyed. Details for such a treatment are generally printed on the dye container. The next step is to determine a pattern and tie the underwear in the appropriate places to achieve it. The next step is the simplest. With the help of the spray gun, apply the dye on the requisite spots. Once the fabric has dried, the tie-dye underwear is ready for use.

When dying underwear, it is important to consider the effect the tying might have on its elasticity. At times, if the underwear is not of a good quality, it will immediately loose all its shape. After dying, the color will not remain on the underwear permanently. To increase the life of the dye, the underwear should be washed in cold water only. The colors are always at a risk of bleeding and so tie-dye underwear should be washed with similar colors or separately.

Because people have added color to cloth for as long as they have been covering their nakedness, it is inevitable that hand dyed finishes will remain a feature of fashion, which tries to grab the eye with unusual customised effects.

We are all familiar with the heavy decorative bleaching that is so prevalent in denimwear products. These decorative finishes emered from China in the 80’s and 90’s and today no wardrobe is complete without pair of denims that appears to be stressed by age, but that was only purchased the day before. The fabric is stressed using enzymes, bleach and even electric sanding machines to give it that well-worn look.

In 2001 and 2002 Prada took tie dye to the catwalks, and for a couple of seasons the world followed slavishly in his wake. Mostly we saw graded colors, fading smoothly one into another, but we also saw harsh contrasting splits of dark color on light backgrounds. There was delicate dyed striping over fabric that was already printed with a stripe, to create uniquely layered effects.

While the European season for tie dye is usually short-lived and faddish in nature, the African fashion scene is quite different. Tie dye has been practiced throughout the continent for centuries. Northern and central Africa has a rich tradition of hand dyed fabrics. For this reason, you will find tie dye in most Afro-Centric fashion ranges, on a regular basis.

In 2005 South African Fashion Week was alive with tie-dyed finishes, represented in the ranges of Stoned Cherrie, Marion & Lindie, Black Coffee, Sun Goddess, JJ Schoeman and Vino Moodley. Gavin Rajah did his bit at Cape Town Fashion Week.

Tie dye has a truly African aspect. It is a craft that one can start with almost nothing, and turn into an income for even the very poor. This is why it will continue to thrive in Africa and India where unemployment is high.

Tie dye will always liven up the local fashion scene due to its versatile nature. Tie dye turns the ordinary into something unique and unusual, a state that many yearn for in this era of mass production and sameness. Tie dye is hand crafted color. It is time for the return of the artisan.

I’ve loved tie dying ever since I dipped tightly rubber banded t-shirts into tubs of Rit Dye in elementary school. The colors and patterns were magical, but the fun part was wearing my creation!

Several years later and I was in The Brightside Tie Dye Emporium in Brattleboro, VT. Upon checking out with a bag of goodies, I noticed a small sign that announced that the owner was running a class in tie dying. I signed up immediately and soon learned the mysteries of making eye catching, non-fading t-shirts in myriads of colors and patterns. Beyond using the information to create pieces to sell at local farmer’s markets, I also used it in school and summer camp so that kids could make delightful pieces of their own. The pride they showed when wearing shirts they made themselves was justified. They were truly gorgeous.

I’m about to describe the method I used with the groups of kids. I’m sure there are different and better ways, but this worked great for me. The dyes to use are Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes. I always bought mine as a dry powder so that the dye would have a much longer shelf life. If you want to do this on a limited scale, try buying three or so colors. Remember, the colors can be mixed! Dyes, chemicals, and squirt bottles can be bought from the source given at the bottom of the article, though there are several other purveyors, too. Pro just happened to be the company I used. They also sell small booklets detailing how to create certain designs are are well worth the few dollars they cost. Any other materials may be purchased at the local Wal-Mart, K-Mart, or grocery store. The key is that I wanted the shirts to be non-fading and last a long, long, long time. If fading is not an issue, Rit Dyes are far less expensive and much easier to use. If you want to create something that will be regularly worn and still stunning three years from now, here’s the deal…

Here is our method for group tie dying. It’s a lot of work, so roll up those sleeves and enlist the parent volunteers!

1)Buy the shirts on sale. We get Large and Xlarge for sixth graders. I do not take pride into account when we do shirts. No one that I’ve met wants a shirt that looks like Spandex! I put several mothers in 4XL, and though they said they would use them for sleep shirts, they sure looked comfortable!

2)You will now need to wash the shirts to remove any grease that was left on the threads from processing. Wash shirts in HOT water with cup of washing soda or Pro-Dye Activator and cup of Synthrapol. Rinse on COLD. Dry shirts

3)Put a different number on the tag of each shirt in permanent marker.

4)Make a solution of 5 gallons of tap water to 3 cups of soda ash or Pro-Dye Activator. You will need four or five batches of this in one tub. I use my large sink for this. Add the shirts; up to 18 at a time, and let sit in the solution for 15 minutes. Wearing rubber gloves, squeeze out and put in washer. Set washer to final spin, and spin with no water coming into tub for rinse. Place shirts in a garbage bag to prevent them from drying.

5)Mix dyes with distilled water up to one week before dying. To one quart of distilled water in an old blender, add the following:

cup of dye

Fuschia

Bright Orange

Golden Yellow

Deep Purple

Raspberry (reddish purple)

cup of dye

Turquoise (FOAMS!)

Kelly Green

Cobalt Blue (FOAMS!)

1 cup of dye

Better Black

6)Store the dyes in squirt bottles and clean milk jugs.

7)Keep folded shirts on a ‘grid table’ when dying.

8)Wrap shirts in seran wrap. Get this from a kitchen / restaurant supply firm.

9)Let shirts sit wrapped for two days.

10)While filling washer (top loading only), take rubber bands off clothes (wear rubber gloves) and toss in washer (12 - 18). Wash and rinse on cold. Then wash on HOT with cup of synthrapol and rinse cold. Dry in drier.

11)Wash with dark clothes the first few times, but shirt will be colorfast.

Dyes and supplies are available from Pro Chemical and Dye Company of Somerset, MA.

Even if you’re not a child of the 60s, you’ve probably had the pleasure of owning and wearing tie dye clothing. If you’ve ever been to an event with a craft fair, chances are that you’ve noticed those eye-catching booths full of colorful tie-dye clothing and home decor. You may even have marveled at how they manage to incorporate those intricate, vibrant designs onto a plain cotton T-shirt. While intricate tie dying is truly an art, you and your family can have loads of fun at home making your own tie dye (or tye dye) creations. Hands down, the best way to learn how to tie-dye is through instructions demonstrated on a video or DVD. Seeing how it’s done, as opposed to reading about it, makes all the difference in the world. Still, tie dye is a process of trial and error, so why not give it a whirl (or a swirl)? It’s All About the Fabric When it comes to tie dye, the right fabric is critical. Natural fibers - like cotton or linen, pick up the dye well. If you stick with 100 percent cotton, you can’t go wrong. To start with, why not pick up some inexpensive T-shirts at your local mass merchandiser? Get one for each family member, and make it a party! Remember, though, that you need to wash and dry the new garments before you start your tie dying party. Unwashed new fabric won’t pick up the dye very well. The Secret of Dyes Actually, the dyes you use to tie-dye aren’t a big secret. For cotton, you need to use a dye that will react well to the fabric, namely Procion MX, dissolved in a urea solution. You can make virtually every color imaginable with just three colors: yellow, turquoise, and fuchsia. But, before you start dying, you need to soak your fabric in soda ash. Tie dye artisans use a few other chemicals as well, which you can learn about on an instructional DVD or video. The Fun Part: Patterns Tie-dye is all about colors and patterns. Learning how to make swirls, crinkles, stripes, wavy lines, hearts, clovers, and - yes - even peace signs is a great way to engage the creativity of everyone in the family. You can learn to tye knots; twist fabric into pancake shapes secured by rubber bands; roll a shirts to form tubes, which you then tie; and pleat the fabric to make symmetrical patterns. Applying the Dye There are at least six different techniques you can use to apply the dye to your fabric, from dipping and soaking to using squeeze bottles and spray bottles. Again, someone with years of experience can best teach you how to apply dyes to get the results you want. Making it Stick After tie dying your shirts or decor, it’s important to follow the steps necessary to make sure the dye reacts with the fiber. Then you need to repeatedly wash the fabric in a special solution so that the dyes don’t inadvertently mix and so the garments remain colorfast. Ultimately, though, tie dye is all about having fun. It can be a family adventure, a fun way to spend a weekend afternoon with friends, or a way to indulge the creative hippie within you. A great instructional DVD or video will help you learn to tie dye, and send you well on your way to creating gorgeous, vibrant designs.

* They have to dress up to do it…We recommend kids kit up with mask and apron to make tie dye. This will protect their clothes from spills that stain. By far their favourite is the latex gloves they have to put on to keep their hands clean. I am told they make for very good water bombs when you are ten years old.

* It gets messy! Most kids enjoy activities that are messy…of course!?

* They play with color. Most children love to play with bright colors. Color is known to stimulate the brain in a number of ways.

* They work with their hands. Tie dye improves strength and fine motor co-ordination in the hands. Children are forced to work with both hands using string and elastic bands.

* They have to follow a set of instructions from beginning to end, in order to achieve a desired result. This teaches children to read, concentrate, think logically and analyse their results. All skills they can use in later life.

* It gives them a sense of achievement and self-worth. Having successfully made something on their own fills a child with a great sense of pride which leads to more confidence in their own abilities.

* Tie dye lends itself to self-expression and uniqueness. Children learn about uniqueness and the beauty of a hand-made thing. These are old-fashioned values that have been lost in our mass produced society.

* The Wow Moment! Kids love the moment when the bindings come off and the end result is finally revealed. I call it the Wow Moment. After thirteen years, I still experience it every time I open a new tie dye.

* They get to wear what they have made. Kids get an even bigger boost to their confidence when they are praised for work well done. Every time they wear their tie dye, somebody will tell them how beautiful it is, or ask where they got it.

* Conclusion…tie dye is a kids-confidence-builder…and it is fun!
